The longest straight stratch of railway is in Australia (301miles long).
Locomotive designer William Stroudley (1833-1889) was granted a patent in 1875 for one of the first speed indicators used on locomotives. It used a paddle wheel and pully arrangement to push water up a glass tube. This read against a scale gave the locomotive speed in MPH.
The longest railway tunnel in Great Britain is the Severn tunnel. It is 4 1/2 miles long and would take two hours to walk.
